MATERNITY LEAVE IS N’T A VACATION

We were in the driveway of the two-bedroom 1950s farmhouse we were renting in Provo, Utah. This must have been 2007. Mel’d just gotten off work at her hardware store job. We were about to go grocery shopping. She was incredibly pregnant. Just-about-to-pop pregnant. Her due date was over a month away; however, she’d be having the baby in a couple of days. Obviously I didn’t know this at the time. I didn’t realize that Mel had preeclampsia and that she’d need an emergency C-section.

Neither of us did.

In the back seat, ready to rock, was a car seat for our first child. Mel tried to reach down and rub her ankles, but her pregnant belly got in the way.

“I can’t wait to get this kid out,” she said. “I’m so tired.” She put her head back and closed her eyes, and I said, “At least you get a vacation. You are going to have four weeks off.”

I raised my eyebrows and looked at her. My face seemed to say, “Lucky.”
